The Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism is pleased to award five to 10 graduate students with $10,000 for one year. These awards are distributed in the spring to be used at registration for the fall semester. Partial awards are given in some circumstances. Students may apply twice: in their first year and in their second year.
Naturally, we also make awards to graduate students who plan to enter other journalism fields such as public relations, advertising, photojournalism and broadcast news. This new requirement adds diversity and fresh thinking from a variety of disciplines to the Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism.
The Mayborn program, which is the only nationally accredited professional master’s degree in Texas, ensures that strong words will continue to come from North Texas Journalism.

Wonder what the Mayborn Scholarship could mean for you? Hear from this year's Mayborn Scholars:
Stephanie Daniels
“This scholarship is especially important to me because I now feel even closer with the Mayborn family. This gift provides me the opportunity to finish my master's degree in order to move on to get my PhD, and eventually teach journalism at the university level.”
Nicole Holland Pearce
“The Mayborn Scholarship allowed me to explore Dallas' media outlets through internships at The Dallas Morning News, D Magazine and the Dallas Observer. After graduation, I'll pursue a writing career in the magazine industry.”
Beth Langton
“The Mayborn Scholarship gave me financial stability to pursue graduate school full-time, and that's definitely a blessing. But more importantly, recognition as a Mayborn scholar feels like validation of my work and efforts by the UNT journalism community -- a place close to my heart and populated by people (past and present) whom I respect and admire. After graduation, I want to write long form stories for magazines, but I haven't ruled out a teaching career. Maybe I'll tackle both.”
Brad Riddel
“The Mayborn scholarship has been vital in helping me achieve my goals. I want to someday leave Mayborn fully prepared to serve as a leader in the communications industry, and this scholarship allows me to do that without continuing financial obligation. The Mayborn family's interest in journalism and educating journalists is exciting to see, and I'm so honored to be a part of the Mayborn legacy.”
Gretchen Sparling
“In a time when significant scholarship money is extremely hard to come by, the Mayborn Scholarship makes it known to students and professionals that this school takes the future of journalism seriously. The gift of scholarship allowed me to hone my craft and make connections in the industry that I plan on using daily as a magazine editor and writer.”
