The late Frank W. Mayborn and his wife Sue Mayborn lend their name to our School. The Mayborn family is among the top journalistic families in the state of Texas and Sue Mayborn remains publisher of the Temple Daily Telegram and the Killeen Daily Herald. Based on this dedication to ethical and accurate journalism and mass communication, the Mayborn School has recruited an outstanding faculty who excel in teaching and research, while still keeping one foot in the professional world. The Mayborn faculty brings more than 400 years of real-world experience to our classrooms every day.

A career in journalism is exciting, dynamic and critical to the future of an informed and enlightened American society. The Mayborn School of Journalism provides students with the creative and critical-thinking skills to prepare them to work in fields including:

  • Journalism - news and sports reporting, writing, visual journalism (stills and video), design, and publishing for the Internet, newspapers, broadcast, magazines, books
  • Advertising - for agencies, corporations, nonprofit organizations and media
  • Public Relations - for agencies, corporations, government, and non-profit organizations
  • Internet - web and desktop publishing, podcasting and blogging
  • Education - teaching in secondary schools or institutions of higher learning

Developed in close partnership with industry, the Mayborn curriculum gives students broad and diverse skills for work in multiple media platforms. Students develop the skills needed to analyze, evaluate and inform, and to consider the ethical implications of mass communication and its impact in today's world. Mayborn students have access to multimedia labs featuring state-of-the-art computers, software and video equipment. The school emphasizes curriculum and career advising and mentoring by professionally trained faculty and staff.

The Mayborn School of Journalism offers five concentrations:

  2. Broadcast and Digital Journalism
  3. Digital and Print Journalism
  4. Photojournalism
  5. Public Relations

Our journalism concentrations - broadcast and digital, print and digital, or photojournalism - can prepare you for a career in reporting, writing, editing and photojournalism (video and photography) for the Internet, television, newspapers, magazines and radio. With a strong focus on multi-platform journalism, Mayborn students gain hands-on experience as news reporters, sports reporters, writers, photojournalists, designers, and editors for online, on air and in print for the North Texas Daily, NTDaily.com, NTDaily TV.

Students receive comprehensive instruction from faculty with extensive professional experience in broadcast, print, online and digital news. They also can complete internships at newspaper, television, radio and web organizations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the nation's fifth largest media market, and in other news organizations in the area and across the state.

Our strategic communication concentrations - advertising and public relations - prepare students to work in advertising, public relations and integrated communication careers in a variety of settings, including advertising, public relations and marketing agencies, corporations, non-profit agencies, government, public affairs and more. You can gain critical thinking skills, creative practices and professional experience by studying cases, developing campaigns and completing internships. To help real-world clients such as non-profit organizations, Mayborn students create materials including advertisements for traditional and non-traditional media, newsletters, news releases, public service announcements, web sites and social media strategies. The Mayborn's student-managed agencies - SWOOP Advertising and Public Relations, and HATCH Visuals - provide the opportunity to learn by doing real work for real clients.

The Mayborn School also offers Teacher Certification in journalism.
