George Getschow is the writer-in-residence of the nationally-acclaimed Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference. He is also the principal lecturer at the Mayborn School of Journalism, and a writing coach for a number of newspapers.

Experience:

He has been writing professionally since 1972 when he was hired as a general assignment reporter for the Mason City (Iowa) Globe Gazette. He spent 16 years at The Wall Street Journal as a reporter, editor, bureau chief, and on the Page One Rewrite Desk. He covered Mexico for several years and directed the newspaper’s coverage of the Southwest.

Many of his proteges have won Pulitzer Prizes and other literary achievements. He continues to freelance and is finishing a book, Walled Kingdom, for John Macrae Books, an imprint of Henry Holt and Company, which grew out of two narratives he wrote for The Wall Street Journal.

Honors and Awards:

  • Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize at The Wall Street Journal
  • Robert F. Kennedy Award for “distinguished writing” about the underprivileged
  • Inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters for his “distinctive literary achievement.”
