Michael McPherson, Ph.D.
Michael A. McPherson is Acting Dean of the Mayborn School of Journalism as well as Professor of Economics. He has been a faculty member at the University of North Texas since 1992. McPherson grew up in the Washington D.C. area, and earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia. He holds a doctorate in economics from Michigan State University.
Professor McPherson’s work as a scholar has involved research into the dynamics of micro and small enterprises in developing countries, and this work has taken him to low- and middle-income countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. McPherson has also studied higher education in America, including exploring issues such as grade inflation and the effectiveness of peer tutoring.
Professor McPherson has received several awards for his teaching, including UNT’s J.H. Shelton Excellence in Teaching Award and being selected as UNT’s nominee for the statewide Piper Professor Award. He also has been honored with the President’s Council University Service Award and the Provost’s Award for Extraordinary Professional Service. He taught at Uganda’s Makerere University during the 1995-96 academic year as a Fulbright Scholar.
During his 26 years at UNT, Professor McPherson has served in numerous leadership capacities, most recently as Associate Vice Provost for Faculty Success.
