Thanks to new digital production and distribution technologies, there are now fewer distinctions between print and broadcast media. Reporters today need to know how to use modern digital communication tools to combine responsible reporting practices and the latest multimedia technologies to create stories that inform, engage and impact a global audience.
At the Mayborn School of Journalism, students learn the skills and responsibilities that distinguish professional journalists in an age when just about anyone can publish on a website or social media service.
The news concentration’s broadcast news program offers students hands-on experience from faculty with extensive professional experience in broadcast and online news. Coursework includes the theory and practice of broadcast reporting and writing, visual journalism and online journalism. Students also cover a news “beat,” shoot video and stills and write, report and produce visual content for the web.
Students also receive instruction in and gain experience appearing on camera, doing live reporting and anchoring and producing programs for radio, television and online, including web casts. Technical instruction is offered in shooting and editing for television, selecting audio for radio news and producing online newscasts.
Students have field experiences and hands-on learning opportunities to develop critical thinking, writing, reporting, directing, producing and photography skills.
Students have the opportunity to work as news reporters, writers, photojournalists, website designers and editors for the North Texas Daily, NTDaily.com, NT Daily TV (part of Denton Community Television) and NTNewsnet. They also can complete internships at television, radio and web organizations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the fourth largest media market in the nation.
While creating original news pieces, students receive extensive hands-on experience with camera, audio and editing equipment. Students in the program have access to computer labs, production studios and equipment that includes the latest professional editing software and digital multimedia recording and editing equipment.
