From all of us at the Mayborn School, we wish you a happy, healthy, safe and joyful holiday season. December has been a month of accomplishment and achievement, capped by final exams and graduation. It's been a busy time, but our students have been working hard. All are looking forward to an equally amazing Spring 2020 semester.
Mayborn Visual News Storytelling students explore real-world issues in series of multimedia stories titled "Policing DFW: The Struggle for Peace."
In the wake of the Atatiana Jefferson killing and the Amber Guyger verdict - both major DFW news events - Lecturer Carolyn Brown's students chose to devote the final five weeks of the semester to producing a visual storytelling package on issues facing the law enforcement community.
Beyond the cover story, specific stories in the series examine:
- Is Black Lives Matter Controversial?
- Being a Black Man in America
- Activists in the DFW Area
- The Latinx Community
Other members of the Mayborn faculty who assisted with the project include: Tracy Everbach, Randy Loftis, Neil Foote, Dorothy Bland and Newly Paul.
If the legend is true, Mayborn students did very well this fall.
The Mayborn's intrepid photojournalism lecturer Todd Bennett snapped a rare photo of the elusive "Lucky," UNT's official good luck charm. As the legend goes, if a student spots Lucky on the way to an exam, it's pretty much an automatic A grade.
Wildlife experts believe that only one of every 100,000 squirrels born in the wild is albino. So UNT is, indeed, also lucky to have Lucky.
UNT Alumna Sarah Broom named National Book Award Finalist.
Sarah Broom, a UNT graduate who studied Journalism and Anthropology, has been named a finalist for ther prestigious National Book Award in non-fiction. Her book, "The Yellow House," examines life in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
"My attention rests on those places that mapmakers often deem 'too young for history.' I write into these grottos, excavating and uncovering the arresting detail that together tell the story of people and places," says Broom.
Broom will be visiting UNT in the spring to share her story of inspiration and her love of the craft of storytelling. Details to come.

The Mayborn School Earns Award for Institutional Effectiveness
Mayborn Associate Professor and Endowed Chair for Multimedia Storytelling Thorne Anderson led the team that assessed the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism degree, an extensive and comprehensive program that ensures that Mayborn students continue to receive a stellar education.
In the photo above, Anderson and Mayborn Associate Dean Dr. Jim Mueller display the "IE Celebrity Award" given by the university to recognize the Mayborn's efforts.
"The award goes to the entire school. We earned it because our faculty has been so responsive to the needs of the assessment committee (administering extra exams, analyzing and reporting results, and answering the pesky emails for follow-up) and because committee members have been so good at wrangling the data each semester. It's a big team effort," said Anderson.
