General Computer Lab Policies
- Food and drinks are not allowed in the computer lab.
- Active Mayborn Journalism students may only use the journalism computer labs.
- Talking/noise is to be kept at a minimum to ensure a pleasant environment for all users.
- Cell phones and personal equipment should be turned off or set to silent. The user should step outside a lab to use the phone.
- Users must wear headphones while listening to audio.
- Users are responsible for providing their own supplies pens, *headphones, flash drives, etc.
- Noise from group work should be kept to a minimum. Discussion of things outside of relevant school projects and assignments should be performed outside of the lab
- When the lab is busy, users who are not utilizing equipment for classwork, such as surfing the web, may be asked to surrender their computer for other users.
- General access labs are provided around campus, which are better suited for non-journalism related work.
- Users are responsible for any intentional damage to lab materials or equipment.
*Some additional items such as headphones may be available for use in the MacLab.
Printing
- Use of Mayborn Computer Lab printers are for Journalism classwork only. Certain printers require approval of a lab worker before it can be used in order to verify content.
- General access labs are available around campus for printing other work outside of Journalism for a small fee.
- Using lab printers to make copies of textbooks, and other copyrighted materials is forbidden.
Appropriate Conduct
- Respect for computer lab staff members is expected of computer lab users. Lab assistants do not make the rules; they are, however, expected to enforce them.
- Offensive language will not be tolerated.
- There is a zero tolerance policy for inappropriate material (as determined by the lab manager and/or student assistant if manager is unavailable), whether brought in by the user or accessed from the Internet either as a Web site or as part of an e-mail. This includes pictures or material accessed through the user's email account. Failure to abide by this policy may result in the user being banned from Computer Lab.
Software
- Only software legally purchased and/or licensed by The Mayborn School of Journalism will be installed on lab computers.
- Should a piece of software need to be updated in order to perform a class related function, please report this to the lab employee on duty or the Technology & Operations Manager.
- Attempts to bypass computer security, and/or install non-supported software, are strictly forbidden. Most software is copyright protected, with criminal charges and/or fines possible if caught copying a program.
MacLab Specific Policies
- You must present a valid UNT ID card at the check-in desk.
- Users will be assigned and directed to a particular computer. The user MUST use the assigned computer. Those desiring to move to another computer must check with a lab assistant BEFORE making such a move.
- All materials checked out for in-lab use (scanners, headphones, etc.) must be returned to the check-in desk before leaving the computer lab.
- Users are responsible for cleaning up their work area before signing out of the computer lab. Do not leave trash for the next user to deal with. Users are also highly encouraged to push in their chairs upon leaving so as not to create potentially dangerous obstacles for other students during periods of high traffic.
