Incoming Student Scholarship Application

This application is for the 2021-2022 academic year. All incoming or prospective journalism students may submit this application to be considered for scholarships.

Scholarship Eligibility

  • Students graduating high school in May-June 2021 or transferring from another college
  • Must be transferring to UNT or a first-time freshman student admitted to UNT
  • Must demonstrate need by filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Students interested in one or more of the following journalism concentrations
    • Advertising
    • Broadcast & Digital News
    • Digital & Print News
    • Photojournalism
    • Public Relations
    • Journalism with Teacher Certification
  • Will be enrolled full-time** (12 hours or more) in the fall 2021 semester.

**There could be an exception if the student has less than 24 hours remaining on their degree plan.

Some scholarships require completion of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We encourage all UNT students to complete the FAFSA annually at to ensure all available financial resources may be utilized. Early application ensures the best opportunity to compete for available funding. If your citizenship prevents you from completing the FAFSA, you may be eligible to complete the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) available through College for All Texans or the Texas Public Education Grant for International Students (TPEG-I) Application available through the UNT International Office.

Mayborn Incoming or Prospective Scholarship Essay Requirement

You must write and upload a 250-word essay answering the question: Why are you interested in pursuing a course of study at the UNT Mayborn School of Journalism?

This is a journalism scholarship. Write as a journalist with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Be passionate and be accurate. Your essay may be the deciding factor in making the decision to award a scholarship.

Please put your name on your essay. The essay must be:

  • Typed
  • Double-spaced
  • 12-point font

Essay topic must be "Why are you interested in pursuing a course of study at the UNT Mayborn School of Journalism?"

Please include your name on your essay(s)*.


If this will be your first time to attend college, you must send a copy of your high school transcript to the Mayborn School of Journalism. If not, you must send college transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities. Your application will not be considered without transcripts. Have transcripts sent right away to:

Awarding of Scholarships

Scholarship winners will be notified by email. Scholarship awards will be presented at the annual Celebrate Mayborn event sponsored by the Mayborn School of Journalism. Time, date and location are TBD. Scholarship recipients not attending the event will be notified by mail after the event.

Scholarships are paid via financial aid. They are applied to the student's fall and spring semester tuition costs (half in fall 2020; half in spring 2021) providing the student is enrolled as full time.

Should you be awarded a scholarship your essay will be given to the donor of the scholarship award. All recipients are required to write a thank you letter to their respective scholarship donors and submit it along with a signed acceptance form to the Mayborn School of Journalism.
