About

Brian has been active in Texas media and communications for more than two decades. As the owner of Sweany and Co., he has concentrated on brand management, governmental relations, and crisis communications for clients ranging from state agencies to national non-profits.

A proud alum of TEXAS MONTHLY, he started his journalism career as an intern, in 1996, and ultimately served as Editor-in-Chief until he resigned, in 2016. He led the magazine's political coverage for multiple legislative sessions, and in his final year, he was named to the Folio 100 as an "Up and Coming Trailblazer." That same year, TEXAS MONTHLY won the award for General Excellence, the highest honor given by the City and Regional Magazine Association.

Brian graduated from UNT in 1994 with a degree in English Literature, and as an undergraduate he worked for three years at the University Writing Center, his first paying job that involved writing. He lived all four years in Bruce Hall and was a founding member of the Riprocks Social Club and active in the A-300 Animal Noises Society. (The Riprocks Social Club was mostly harmless except for the time a Spanish professor chased him from the Language Building all the way past the ISB.)

He is also a board member of the Texas Book Festival, and in his free time you can find him on the tennis court trying not to double-fault or at his home office trying to finish his book on Charles Goodnight.
