First Generation Scholarship

Awards are given to first generation college students in their sophomore year or higher who meet certain requirements. Scholarship was established by Dorothy Bland.

Description, Requirements, and Other Information: 

As part of UNT's 2014 We Care We Count campaign, the UNT Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism Dean established three undergraduate $1,000 scholarships to target the following areas for the next five years.

$1,000 First Generation Journalism Student Diversity Champion Scholarship sponsored by Dorothy M. Bland

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student criteria required is listed below:

  • Student must be first-generation UNT undergraduate journalism student enrolled full-time with minimum cumulative GPA to be a student in good standing.
  • Student must be at least a sophomore, member of the UNT Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists or the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Being active in NT Daily in print, online or TV is preferred.
  • Résumé and cover letter required to explain career interest and plans.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student criteria required is listed below:

  • Student must be first-generation, full-time undergraduate UNT student enrolled in the PR track with minimum cumulative GPA to be a student in good standing.
  • Student must be at least a sophomore and member of the UNT Public Relations Student Society of America chapter.
  • Résumé and cover letter required to explain career interest and plans.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student criteria required is listed below:

  • Student must be first-generation, full-time UNT undergraduate student enrolled in advertising track with minimum cumulative GPA to be a student in good standing.
  • Students must be at least a sophomore and active in the Gravitas Ad Team and/or SWOOP, our student-run advertising and PR firm.
  • Résumé and cover letter required to explain career interest and plans.
