Undergraduate Certificate in Sports Journalism

The sports journalism certificate program is designed to enhance writing, reporting, broadcast and multimedia skills for careers in the field of sports journalism.

The certificate is not a separate major track, but rather an extension of the standard required coursework offered by the News Concentration. To qualify, students must have journalism major status and meet specific departmental requirements.

For information on Degree Plans, Degree Checklists and Transfer Guidelines, visit Advising.

Classroom Experience

The program teaches sports reporting, feature writing, column writing and visual news storytelling for web, broadcast and print. Students also study the impact of sports in society, sports as entertainment and business and the ethics of sports journalism.

Field Experience

Students have the opportunities for supervised, intensive practical experience covering news or sports events on a daily basis, including interviewing, writing, reporting, shooting, editing reports for the North Texas Daily and other web, broadcast and print venues. Professional internships and practicum opportunities are also available.
