Some scholarships require completion of a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We encourage all UNT students to complete the FAFSA annually at www.fafsa.gov to ensure all available financial resources may be utilized. Early application ensures the best opportunity to compete for available funding.  If your citizenship prevents you from completing the FAFSA, you may be eligible to complete the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) available through College for All Texans or the Texas Public Education Grant for International Students (TPEG-I) Application available through the UNT International Office.

Essay Requirement:

You must write and upload a brief essay (no more than 500 words*) answering the question: By awarding you this scholarship, the Mayborn is contributing to your future. How do you envision using your degree to contribute to society in the future?

This is a journalism scholarship. Write as a journalist with proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Be passionate and be accurate. Your essay may be the deciding factor in making the decision to award a scholarship.

The essay must be:

  • Typed
  • Double-spaced
  • 12-point font

*Note that some scholarships require an additional essay with different topics. You will have the opportunity to upload additional essays for specific scholarships within this application.

Deadline:

Friday, March 3, 2017 at 5 pm CST. Award decisions will not be made or announced until after this deadline.

Awarding of Scholarships:

Scholarship winners will be notified by email. Scholarship awards will be presented at the annual Celebrate Mayborn event sponsored by the Mayborn School of Journalism. The date is Thursday, April 27. The location is the University Union 314. Scholarship recipients not attending the event will be notified by mail after the event.

Scholarships are paid via financial aid. They are applied to the student’s fall and spring semester tuition costs (half in fall 2017; half in spring 2018) providing the student is enrolled as full time. Students graduating in December 2017 receive only half the scholarship award and, depending on the scholarship, only if they are enrolled as full time students.

Should you be awarded a scholarship your essay will be given to the donor of the scholarship award. All recipients are required to write a thank you letter to their respective scholarship donors and submit it along with a signed acceptance form to the Mayborn School of Journalism.
