A Message from the Dean
On the day I write this, it is early in September, and I started my story as Dean
of the Frank W. and Sue Mayborn School of Journalism two short months ago. What a
whirlwind it has been already! The enthusiastic welcome I received from staff, faculty,
alumni and students has been humbling, and it speaks to the comradery that is present
and the cooperation that is yet to come. I am honored to be a part of this fantastic
School. The new academic year will be another time of transition as the School settles
in under the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The Mayborn will retain
much autonomy, but we look forward to the collaborations and partnerships that will
make the School even stronger.
Faculty & Staff Retreat
Faculty and Staff of the Mayborn School of Journalism prepared for an amazing year at the annual Compass Retreat in August. The Mayborn faculty brings more than 400 years of real-world experience to the classroom each day to benefit the school's nearly 1,200 students.
Mayborn in London
Each summer, Mayborn students fan out across the globe to study journalism and strategic communications practices abroad. Check out this video from this year's "Mayborn in London" class.
College Days
Students line the hallway at Sycamore Hall to learn more about the Mayborn's always-active student organizations during College Day on August 21. Mayborn students participate in a number of groups, including SPJ, NABJ, NAHJ, NPPA, Ad Club, PRSSA, SWOOP and HATCH.

New Website for the North Texas Daily
Greetings, Mayborn Family!
The North Texas Daily website has a new look! NTDaily.com has been remodeled to provide a sleeker, more user-friendly look that will allow for more multi-media elements. In addition to the relaunch of the website (same address, new look), the students will also create a weekly newsletter that will update viewers on what's going on in and around the UNT campus delivered right to your inbox. Thanks to director Adam Reese for his leadership on these projects this summer.
Mayborn Newborn
Join us in welcoming the newest addition to the extended Mayborn Family - Samantha, born August 23 to photojournalism alum Tyler Cleveland and wife Alexandra, also a UNT graduate.
Congratulations!
Congrats, Gravitas!
The Mayborn's GRAVITAS competition ad team made 2019 a stellar year, bringing home a winning trophy for District 10 National Student Advertising Competition - a first for Mayborn advertising students in what is considered one of the nation's most competitive districts.
The group's pitch for client Wienerschnitzel incorporated all elements of advertising - research, strategy, creative, social media and broadcast.
Congratulations to Hope Alvarez
Mayborn photojournalism student Hope Alvarez has been selected to participate in this year's Eddie Adams Workshop, one of only 100 chosen from universities across the United States. The program teams workshop participants up with top professional photographers and editors for a four-day gathering that includes assignments, portfolio reviews, panel discussions and presentations.
"It's quite an honor to be selected for the Eddie Adams Workshop. I look forward to sharpening my photojournalism skills and learning from some of the top professionals in the industry. I'm so thankful for this opportunity, and I can't wait to see what the Purple Team creates," said Alvarez.
Congratulations to Briana Castañón
The Mayborn's Briana Castañón was among a select few nationwide chosen to participate in this year's Carnegie-Knight News21 project, hosted by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University.
