Many Mayborn School courses are closely aligned with working newsrooms and organizations throughout the field of Journalism and Mass Communication. Each semester, our students work in teams under the guidance of faculty and outside experts on a variety of project topics - all crucial to real-world journalism.

Visual News Storytelling

In Fall 2021, Mayborn Broadcast students working under Senior Lecturer Carolyn Brown produced a series of stories on topics that are difficult, important and relevant to the vital topics of our time - ranging from mental health, immigration, DACA, homelessness, challenges in the Black community and more.

"I always encourage my students to cover the hard stories," said Professor Brown. "The project is bilingual, because that's where the future is - and it opens up more doors for our students to work on stories about the Latino/a/x community," she added.

PR class earns grant to promote First Amendment awareness among UNT students

Most college students know that the First Amendment protects freedom of speech, but they're not too sure about the other four freedoms. Professor Kim Keller's graduate-level Public Relations Campaigns class worked to address that, leveraging a grant from the national nonprofit group "1 for All" to address the issue, to help build greater understanding and respect for the five freedoms of the First Amendment.

Mayborn Capstone Class joins Dallas Media Collaborative to report on Affordable Housing

UNT Capstone classes spent the fall of 2021 working on stories about affordable housing issues as part of a project by the Dallas Media Collaborative, a new nonprofit network of area media outlets and colleges and universities with emphasis on solutions-focused journalism. Mayborn Narrative Students Report on the Coronavirus in support of the Mayborn Conference

Each year, Mayborn narrative students interview leading journalists and storytellers to produce stories in support of our annual Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Conference. This past year, they also worked to produce an insightful series of stories covering virtually all aspects of the Coronavirus.
